From Zagreb

 

Ahora me tocó a mí estar en Croacia, pero pasando unos días en su capital, Zagreb. El motivo fue un casamiento de amigos y fue una muy buena ocasión para visitar este pequeña ciudad de un poco más de un millón de habitantes. La ciudad tiene un centro histórico muy pintoresco con una gran catedral y calles empedradas. Algo para no perderse es el mercado Dolac donde el mundo rural invade el centro de Zagreb.

It is me now in Croatia, but spending a few days in the capital, Zagreb. The occasion was a wedding of friends and was a very good opportunity to visit this small town of just over one million inhabitants. The city has a picturesque old town center with a large cathedral and cobbled streets. Something not to miss is the Dolac market where rural Crotia invades Zagreb.

Sunset in Zadar

Bañada por los últimos rayos de sol de mi último atardecer en la bella Croacia. Zadar nos regaló esta luz amelocotonada y esta sinfonía de colores. Y hablo de música porque os estoy mostrando el Órgano marino de Zadar, un elemento arquitectónico / instrumento musical experimental, que produce música por medio del empuje de las olas y una serie de tubos situados por debajo de un gran conjunto de escalones de mármol. Esta maravilla fue diseñada por el arquitecto Nikola Bašić como parte del proyecto para rediseñar la nueva costa de la ciudad, situada al norte de Dalmacia.

Still reminding the last rays of sun on my last evening in the beautiful Croatia. Zadar gave us as a farewell gift a wonderful peachy light and colourful symphonies during the sunset. And I am talking about music because I'm on the Sea Organ of Zadar,  an architectural object and an experimental musical instrument which plays music by way of sea waves and tubes located underneath a set of large marble steps. This marvel was designed by the architect Nikola Bašić as part of the project to redesign the new coast of the town, in the North of Dalmatia.

Good morning, Hvar!

Una de las características más notables de Dalmacia son las más de mil islas que dan la réplica a la costa del mar Adriático. Sin ninguna duda, en ellas encontré las mejores playas de Croacia, como en Hvar, en Brač y en Korčula. El viajero debe tener en mente que no va a hallar playas de fina arena, sino playas rocosas de un agua tan cristalina que permite observar el fondo del mar incluso en las zonas de mucha profundidad. Las áreas de baño están salpicadas de pequeñas barcas, que los niños utilizan de trampolín para sus audaces saltos, y de campos de waterpolo, un auténtico deporte nacional en la región.

One of the most notable features of Dalmatia is the more than a thousand islands in front of the Adriatic coast. I found there the best beaches in Croatia -Hvar, Brač and Korčula-. Travellers have to keep in mind they won't find sandy beaches, but rocky beaches with crystal-clear waters allowing them to observe the seabed even in areas of great depth. Swimming areas are dotted with small boats that children used as a trampoline for them bold jumping and waterpolo fields, a true national sport in the region.

A walk around the picturesque Šibenik

 Con el olor a sal y a mar todavía muy fuerte en mi recuerdo, comienzo a contaros mi viaje por Dalmacia, la región del sur de Croacia famosa por sus hermosas playas. Sin embargo, Dalmacia no es sólo turismo de sol y playa, sino que tiene, además, un notable patrimonio cultural y natural protegido por la Unesco. Como es el caso de Šibenik, una pintoresca ciudad fortificada en la desembocadura del río Krka con el mar Adriático. Reminiscencias de un pasado florido de comerciantes y navegantes venecianos y turcos, que ahora son sustituidos por turistas de todo el mundo a bordo de sus imponentes barcos.

With the smell of salt and sea still very strong in my mind, I start the diary of my road trip through Dalmatia, the southern region of Croatia known for its beautiful beaches. However, Dalmatia is not just sun and beach tourism, but it has a remarkable cultural and natural heritage protected by UNESCO. As it is the case in Šibenik, a picturesque fortified town at the mouth of the river Krka in the Adriatic Sea. Reminiscent of a past with traders and sailors from Venice or Turkey, who are now replaced by tourists from around the world on its impressive boats.

Ferragosto in Brussels

 

15 de agosto en Bruselas...Nubloso y gris, pero para marcar el día de la Asunción de la Virgen María, nuestro nuevo rey Felipe I de Bélgica abrió su palacio al público. Un laberinto de marfil, baño de oro y candelabros, con cientos de retratos de Leopoldo I, el miedoso antecesor del Rey actual. Demasiado opulento este palacio para un país tan modesto... pero la excusa perfecta para visitar el increíble obra de arte Heaven of Delight  de Jan Fabre, quien decoró el techo de una habitación real con las alas de 1.4 millones de escarabajos de Tailandia, y para deambular por la piedritas de la Plaza del Palacio Real y los parques reales.

15th of August in Brussels...Cloudy and grey, but to mark Ascension Day our new king, King Philip I of Belgium, opened his palace to the public. A maze of marble, gold leaf and chandeliers, with hundreds of portraits of the King’s fearsome ancestor Leopold I. Too grand a palace for such a modest country... but a great excuse to visit modern artist Jan Fabre’s amazing Heaven of Delight , where he decorated the palace’s mirror room with the wings of 1.4 million Thai jewel beetles, before taking a stroll through the cobbled Place du Palais and royal parks.

A return to the roots

Seguimos de vacaciones. El Pirineo aragonés es uno de mis sitios favoritos en verano desde que, de pequeña, acampaba ahí un mes con los scouts. Aunque la mayoría de la gente lo prefiere en invierno, por sus fantásticas pistas de esquí, para mí esta zona al norte de España, muy cerquita de Francia, es un auténtico refugio cuando intento huir del calor asfixiante de la ciudad. Las montañas y los campos están pintados de un verde intenso, el agua de los ríos es tan clara que permite ver las piedras que duermen en su lecho y los pueblos, todos ellos muy hermosos, saludan al turista con sus casas de piedra y pizarra y sus calles estrechas.

Still on holidays. The Pyrenees (in Aragon) is one of my favorite places in summer since, when I was younger I used to camp here a month with the scouts. While most people prefer to come here during winter, due to its fantastic ski slopes, I love this area in the North of Spain, very close to France, because it's a real haven when I try to escape the stifling heat down in the city. The mountains and the fields are painted in bright green, the river water is so clear you can see the stones sleeping in the riverbed and the beautiful villages are full of stone houses and narrow streets.

Spanish summertime

Por fin de vacaciones!! Además del fin de semana en El Rompido, me escapé un par de días de nuevo a Sevilla, que las altas temperaturas parecían querer derretir. En España, el verano se disfruta a partir de las ocho de la tarde, cuando la gente se reinventa y se prepara para disfrutar del mejor momento del día: la puesta del sol en una terracita tomando el aperitivo... Dolce farniente ;-)

Already on holidays! In addition to the weekend in El Rompido, I spent a couple of days in Seville, where it seems the high temperatures are going to melt everything. The summer in Spain is enjoyed from 8pm when people are reinvented and ready to enjoy the best time of day: the sunset having the aperitif on a terrace... Dolce farniente;-)

El Rompido parte II

 Seguimos en El Rompido, pero esta vez nos preparamos  para ir a la fiesta que todos los años se lleva a cabo en el pueblo. Durante una semana el Rompido se llena de gente que viene desde otros lugares cercanos, la plaza se convierte en una disco al aire libre con musica en vivo y DJs. Los botellones, por supuesto, no podían faltar, pero aquí se hacen al lado del mar. Todo un lujo.

Still in El Rompido, but this time we prepare ourselves to go to the party that every year takes place in the village. For a week El Rompido is filled with people who come from other nearby places, the square becomes an open-air disco with live music and DJs. The botellones, of course, could not miss, but here are next to the sea.Amazing!
