De Markten

Una de las cosas que más me divierten de Bruselas es lo diferente que son los belgas valones y los flamencos. Los podrás distinguir antes de escucharles hablar. Además de los rasgos físicos, se mueven por ambientes muy diferentes. De Markten es uno de esos lugares. Este centro cultural / bar /restaurante es uno de los puntos de encuentro por excelencia de la comunidad flamenca en Bruselas. Cercano a la plaza Ste Catherine, De Markten ofrece una programación cultural muy variada que va desde workshops a exposiciones de arte pasando por obras de teatro. No te lo pierdas si estás en Bruselas!

Differences between Belgian Walloons and Flemings are much bigger than I thought before living in this country. You can observe these differences even before they start to speak. In addition to the physical traits, they use to go out in different environments. De Markten is one of those places. This cultural centre / bar / restaurant is one of the meeting point par excellence for the Flemish community in Brussels. Close to Ste Catherine square, De Markten has a varied cultural program (workshops, art exhibition, theatre plays). Do not miss it if you're in Brussels!

Namur en mai

La ciudad de Namur, al sur de Bélgica, pertenece a la región de Wallonie, comunidad de habla francesa. Fue mi primera vez y aunque el tiempo no ayudó, me divertí mucho. Primero, caminando en la vieja parte de la ciudad, luego subiendo la citadelle desde donde se puede ver toda la ciudad...una vista increible! Además, del 8 al 12 de Mayo, el fin de semana largo, la ciudad se llena de artistas, eventos y mercados. Hasta las Iglesias se convierten en museos de arte. 
 
The city of Namur is located at the south of Belgium and it belongs to the Wallonia region, thus a French speaking community. It was my first time and even though the weather didn't help, I have a fantastic time. First of all having a long walk around the old part of the city, then going up to the citadelle where you can find an incredible view to the whole city. Finally, during the last long weekend (8-12 May) the streets of Namur became full of artists, performances and markets. Even the churches became an art museum.

Hablar de arquitectura y de modernismo en Bélgica es hablar de Victor Horta. Bruselas está salpicada de su huella en forma de edificios singulares donde combinó funcionalidad con los elementos artísticos característicos del art nouveau de finales del s XIX. La Casa Tassel, la Casa Solvay o la Casa Horta son todas ellas construcciones innovadoras que se caracterizan por ser edificios unifamiliares donde prescindió del pasillo y de las habitaciones en fila creando espacios fluidos y dando un nuevo tratamiento al uso del hierro y del cristal, creando formas vegetales tanto en elementos arquitectónicos como en el mobiliario.

When you talk about architecture and modernism in Belgium, the name of Victor Horta comes immediately to your mind. Brussels has his mark in almost every street with unique buildings where functionality is combined with artistic elements of art nouveau, the main style of the late XIX century. The Tassel House, the Solvay House or the Horta House are all innovative constructions characterized by single-family buildings where he disregarded the hallway and the rooms in a row creating fluid spaces. He also took a new treatment with the use of iron and glass, creating organic forms both in architectural elements and the furniture.

The Abraham archives: new exhibition at Antwerp’s Mode Museum

El Museo de la Moda de Amberes(MoMu) alberga una interesante colección sobre el legado de los archivos de la compañía suiza Abraham, que creó los estampados que utilizaron los grandes maestros de la moda del siglo XX como Balenciaga, Dior, Givenchy e YSL. Muchos de los diseños fueron encargados a artistas como Joan Miro y Marc Chagall. Una deliciosa conjunción entre arte visual y tejido para dar forma a prendas únicas.

No os perdáis el Vide-dressing en el Cafe de la Presse el viernes 3 de mayo por la tarde. Estaremos allí!

The Fashion Museum in Antwerp (MoMu) hosts an interesting collection on the legacy of the Swiss company Abraham, who created the prints used by the great designers of last century as Balenciaga, Dior, Givenchy and YSL. Many of the designs were commissioned from artists such as Joan Miro and Marc Chagall. A delicious combination between visual art and fabrics to shape unique pieces.

Montmartre

Regresé al Montmartre en el que fui tan feliz hace unos años. Es mi barrio. Se respira una gloria pasada, una nostalgia que no se olvida. Todavía queda uno de los siete molinos que poblaron la colina como muestra de un pasado que ya no existe. Pero Montmartre sí que existe y seguirá existiendo por mucho tiempo, porque no es un espacio físico, sino una idea: Montmartre es la bohemia.

I went back to Montmartre where I was so happy a few years ago. This is my neighborhood, my place. It's possible to feel a glourious past, an unforgettable nostalgia. It still remains one of the seven mills located around the hill as a sign of a past that no longer exists. But Montmartre does exist and will exist for a long time, because it is not a physical space but an idea: Montmartre is bohemia.

Winter time...in Spring

Aquí mi look para el evento en el WIELS. A pesar de la primavera, Bruselas no nos permite más que seguir usando abrigos, botas y sombreros. Ojalá les guste!
