Duden Park

De vuelta en Bruselas. Este finde fuimos a pasear a Duden Park, un bellísimo parque situado en Saint Gilles cerca de Forest Park. No me canso de repetirlo: Bruselas nos está regalando un invierno inesperadamente suave con jornadas soleadas y luminosas. Los días, cada vez más largos, despiden al sol con estas maravillosas puestas y juegos de sombras.

Back in Brussels. This weekend we went for a walk to Duden Park, a beautiful park located in Saint Gilles near Forest Park. I never tire of repeating: Brussels is unexpectedly mild for this time with sunny and bright winter days. Days are getting longer, and we can enjoy wonderful sunsets and play with the shadow.

Hoy me gustaría hablaros de mi barrio: Saint-Gilles. Desde que me mudé a Bruselas siempre me sedujo y en cuanto pude me vine a vivir acá. Al sur de Bruselas, Saint-Gilles tiene una marcada identidad multicultural derivada de su variada población; por ejemplo, la place Van Meenen acoge todos los años el festival de la comunidad portuguesa. Puedes encontrar desde viviendas semi-abandonadas cerca de la estación de tren de Bruselas Sur al norte del barrio, hasta elegantes casas señoriales en las fronteras del sur con Uccle e Ixelles, a los hoteles turísticos en el extremo interior de la Chaussée de Charleroi. Además, Saint-Gilles es también conocido por ser uno de los centros de arte y vida estudiantil en Bruselas.

Today I would like to talk about my neighbourhood: Saint-Gilles. Since I moved to Brussels, I have always wanted to live here. Saint-Gilles has a multicultural identity stemming from its diverse population. For example, the place Van Meenen  hosts the annual festival of Brussels' Portuguese community. The houses vary from semi-derelict tenements near the Brussels-South railway station in the north, to elegant patrician houses on the southern borders with Uccle and Ixelles, to tourist hotels at the inner end of the Chaussée de Charleroi. Saint-Gilles is also known as one of the centers of artistic and student life in Brussels.

Rue Vanderschrick: Art-Noveau Street

Situada en uno de los barrios más antiguos de la ciudad, esta larga calle repleta de una notable arquitectura Art Nouveau lleva el nombre de una familia  famosa de Saint Gilles. Los Vanderschrick (o Van der Schrick) fueron una familia de terratenientes, que dieron lugar a una dinastía de políticos. Marcaron la vida de la ciudad e influyeron en su desarrollo urbano. La familia poseía muchas tierras en esta calle, por lo que encargó contruir al arquitecto-empresario Jean-Baptiste Carsoel varios edificios majestuosos.

Located in one of the oldest neighbourhood in the city, this long street full of remarkable architecture Art Nouveau is named after a famous family of Saint Gilles. The Vanderschrick (or Van der Schrick) were a family of landowners, which led to a political dynasty. They set the pace in the city and influenced in its urban development. The family owned a lot of land in this street, commissioning the architect build-entrepreneur Jean-Baptiste Carsoel several majestic buildings.

Porte de Hal

                               

Construida en 1381, la Porte de Hal es el último vestigio de la segunda muralla medieval de la ciudad de Bruselas. En primer lugar, llevaba el nombre de la puerta Obbrussel (alta de Bruselas, hoy Saint-Gilles). Su función militar terminó en 1564. El conjunto incluyó siete torres, que fueron destruidas entre 1818 y 1840 para permitir la construcción de los bulevares del "pequeño cinturón". La Porte de Hal sirvió de granero, de iglesia luterana, de cárcel y de depósito de archivo, antes de convertirse en museo a partir 1847.

Built in 1381, Halle Gate is a 14th-century city gate from the second set of defensive walls that enclosed Brussels. The gate was named for the city of Halle in Flemish Brabant which it faces. The original gate included a portcullis and drawbridge over a moat. The structures that housed these are still visible. While the other six gateways and the defensive walls were demolished, the Halle Gate survived as it was used as a prison. It was at other times used as a customs house, for grain storage, and a Lutheran church.

Adiós Rue Jourdan 133 ... Este loft espacioso ha sido mi hogar durante los últimos 2 años. Tengo muchos recuerdos queridos de este departamento - de cuando mis padres vinieron a visitarme, de las cenas con amigos, conciertos y fiestas, de nuestro mercado vintage. Tantas cosas ocurrieron allí y sin embargo, nunca más volveré a pasar por esa puerta ...

I have so many dear memories of this appartement - of when my parents came to visit, of dinners with friends, concerts and parties, of our second-hand clothes market. So many things happened there and yet I will never ever go back through that door...
