Les Marolles

Les Marolles es sin duda alguna el barrio bohemio-chic por excelencia de Bruselas. El mercado de pulgas de la Place jeu de Balle vertebra una zona florecida de tiendas vintage y de jóvenes creadores, anticuarios y tiendas de diseño vanguardista, restaurantes de comida tradicional belga y de sofisticada nouvelle cuisine. Desde hace unos meses, el antiguo cuartel de bomberos que preside la plaza fue reconvertido en galerías de arte y restaurantes, como el PIN-PON, que tiene unas vistas espectaculares.

Les Marolles is undoubtedly the most bohemian-chic neighbourhood in Brussels. The flea market is in the square jeu de Balle is the center of an area when it's possible to find vintage and young designers stores, antique and modern design shops, traditional Belgian food and sophisticated nouvelle cuisine restaurants. A few months ago, the old fire station that dominates the square was turned into an amazing place with art galleries and restaurants, as PIN-PON, which has spectacular views over the square.

Porte de Hal

                               

Construida en 1381, la Porte de Hal es el último vestigio de la segunda muralla medieval de la ciudad de Bruselas. En primer lugar, llevaba el nombre de la puerta Obbrussel (alta de Bruselas, hoy Saint-Gilles). Su función militar terminó en 1564. El conjunto incluyó siete torres, que fueron destruidas entre 1818 y 1840 para permitir la construcción de los bulevares del "pequeño cinturón". La Porte de Hal sirvió de granero, de iglesia luterana, de cárcel y de depósito de archivo, antes de convertirse en museo a partir 1847.

Built in 1381, Halle Gate is a 14th-century city gate from the second set of defensive walls that enclosed Brussels. The gate was named for the city of Halle in Flemish Brabant which it faces. The original gate included a portcullis and drawbridge over a moat. The structures that housed these are still visible. While the other six gateways and the defensive walls were demolished, the Halle Gate survived as it was used as a prison. It was at other times used as a customs house, for grain storage, and a Lutheran church.

Marché aux puces - Place du jeu de balle

No hay domingo soleado que se precie en Bruselas sin paseo matutino por el mercado de pulgas de la place Jeu de Balle. Aunque los vendedores ambulantes disponen sus tesoros y baratijas sobre el suelo empedrado cada mañana, es el séptimo día de la semana cuando turistas y lugareños prefieren pasearse por esta peculiar plaza del sur de la ciudad, en pleno barrio des Marolles. La plaza está rodeada de bares donde beber y comer "a la belga" y de tiendas de moda de vintage, donde perderse horas y horas. Una recomendación "incontournable" para todo visitante que se precie!

There is no nice sunny Sunday in Brussels without a walk around the flea market on Place Jeu de Balle. Although vendors show their treasures and trinkets on the stone floor every morning, on Sundays is when tourists and locals prefer walking through this particular square in the neighborhood des Marolles. The square is surrounded by bars to drink and eat "the Belgian style" and by vintage fashion shops where spending hours and hours. One "incontournable" recommendation for every visitor who really wants to enjoy Brussels!
